OLPC and CU’s

November 13th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Most of you have probably heard of OLPC, or One Laptop per Child.  I stumbled over their "promotion" this morning that is running until the end of the month,  Give 1, Get 1.  You pay $399 and you are buying one laptop for a child in a developing nation and one for yourself as well.  The $200 laptop you give to a developing child is tax deductible and you get an OLPC laptop too!  More specs can be found on the OLPC laptop here on Wikipedia.

So after reading about it this morning, it got my mind thinking about how CU’s could get involved with something like this.  Could they buy 10 of the G1G1, give 10 to staff and the other 10 donated?  Could we actually go right to the organization, get them as a SEG, and have a special checking account where the dividends go to buying OLPC’s instead of paying out interest?  Kind of like the Target 1% back to a school of your choice program, but for the OLPC?

There are a ton of options we could do, but what do you think would be the best?

I got the same promotion via email on Monday. I think it would be a great movement to get involved with, especially so if it could be done on a large scale. Participating in charity causes like this are a great way to help credit unions set themselves apart from banks and show just how people-centered CUs truly are, plus its just a good thing to do. ;)
From a technical standpoint, the things OLPC is doing with these laptops is amazing. I can’t wait for some of their technology to trickle down into the mainstream technology space.
